When the lesser of two evils prevailed

It’s again that time of the year, when all the standing in long never-ending queue’s under the wrath of the sun, shedding all our bodily fluids through all the wrong areas, and adorning nail polish that a 17 year old girl would not be proud of,  all in the pursuit of choosing the lesser of two evils starts to bear fruit. It’s quite heartening to note that amidst all the chaos that has ensued prior to the day of voting, in the end, karma has prevailed. The recent events has made me wonder, why we’re all forced to choose between the lesser of two evils? Why isn’t there a leader who rises from all the debris of corruption, and stands up to be counted as a leader who can take the nation forward? Why don’t we see strong campaigning by newer candidates? Why don’t we have a leader who is far from intimidated by two forces that have ruled us for so long? How long are we going to have a two horse race? If these recent results have told us anything, it’s that a large part of the public have opened their eyes to the public menace, that is the current political administration. The recent results fill us with hope that we’re not going to settle, that there will be an uprising if need be. None of the results reflect this more than what happened at West Bengal. An end of a 34 year old stint of administration, an end of an era, a sign that people have woken to see the world as it is, and not as they want it to be.

I’m honored to be a part of a democratic system that has finally started to work, a democratic system where ‘of the people, for the people, and by the people’ is finally beginning to make sense. We have lived most of our lives blaming the system, blaming those who have ruled over us, and even blaming America for all our misfortunes. But we fail to see that the biggest part of the system we live in is, us, the people. We can singlehandedly change the destiny of our nation for the better of for worse. The democratic system gives the people the power, and it’s about time we wake up.
